After nearly two years, my time at Intrepid Studios came to an abrupt end. I had the chance to work alongside an incredible group of people—talented, thoughtful, and relentlessly committed to building something special. Sadly, the company closed its doors for good this week.
The bar my peers set pushed me hard, and I’ve grown a ton since starting in Summer 2024—both as an engineer and as a teammate.
As I move forward, I’m looking to continue as a Software Engineer with a focus on backend web development.

Moving On From Intrepid Studios

In 2024, I worked on a large user account migration (~1.6M accounts) off a game-service cloud provider (PlayFab) where a lot of our critical identity and commerce data lived:
-  authentication
-  game ownership data
-  storefront entitlements

The “easy” part was moving data. The hard part was moving it safely, with minimal downtime, and with a fragmented, legacy data model that had drifted for years.
While planning, I quickly realized we had a severe throughput constraint: certain user data could only be extracted iteratively (per-user) from PlayFab. Our first-pass approach was a Node.js script, but no matter what concurrency method I chose, it was not nearly performant enough. The extraction step alone was estimated to take 6+ hours—unacceptable downtime.
So I rewrote the extraction pipeline in C++ using libcurl, pushing concurrency hard: using as many sockets as the kernel would allow, and saturating outbound requests right up to the limit. The result was night-and-day: 1.6M-user extraction completed in ~35 minutes!

“Make it faster” isn't always the best approach but in this case it lent many extra hours of time that was used to smoke test our data in the new system.

## Reflecting on Five Remarkable Years at BCS Games
As I turn the page to a new chapter in my professional journey, I want to take a moment to reflect on the past four years at BCS Games. It has been an incredible ride, filled with challenges, learning, and most importantly, growth. Working in the gaming industry allowed me to push the boundaries of creativity and technical skills, particularly with our latest project, Feudal Doodle.

Innovative Thinking: Developing games demanded constant innovation. This experience sharpened my problem-solving skills and my ability to think outside the box.
Technical Expertise: Working on various aspects of game development, especially on complex systems like custom rendering pipelines, honed my technical abilities.

A New Chapter: Transitioning from Game Development to Web Development

## Introduction
In the ever-evolving world of mobile gaming, BCS Games' latest title, "Feudal Doodle," stands out with its innovative
wave-based combat system where players draw their attacks to defeat enemies. In this case study, I'll share my journey
as the lead in look development and my contributions to the game's unique visual style and engaging gameplay.

## Role and Responsibilities
As the head of look development for "Feudal Doodle," my role encompassed a wide range of responsibilities:

**Wave System and AI Involvement:**
Played a significant role in developing the game's wave system and AI, enhancing player engagement and challenge.

**Technical Innovation:**
Developed a custom rendering pipeline in Unity for a distinctive hand-drawn look, using a hatch-gradient style.

**Asset Development:**
Modeled and rigged numerous character models and environment assets, ensuring they fit seamlessly within the game's
aesthetic.

## Challenges and Solutions
One of the primary challenges was achieving the hand-drawn appearance that was central to "Feudal Doodle's" identity.
Traditional methods in Unity fell short in delivering the desired aesthetic, prompting me to innovate.

**Solution:**
Custom Rendering Pipeline: I authored a Scriptable Rendering Pipeline in Unity, tailored to produce a unique
hatch-gradient appearance. This involved extensive experimentation and fine-tuning to ensure that all visible objects
in the game maintained a consistent and appealing hand-drawn look.

## Tools and Technologies
Leveraging a suite of cutting-edge tools was crucial in bringing "Feudal Doodle" to life:

**Unity:**
Utilized for overall game development, with a focus on custom scripting and rendering.

**C#:**
Scripted game behaviors and interactions.

**Blender, Houdini FX, and ZBrush:**
Employed for modeling, rigging, and texturing of game assets, contributing to the game's distinct visual style.


## Outcome and Impact
"Feudal Doodle" was successfully launched on iOS and Android app stores. While the user base was modest, the game
received enthusiastic feedback from those who played it, highlighting the engaging gameplay and unique visual style.
My contributions in look development and the wave system played a pivotal role in shaping the game's identity and
enhancing the overall player experience.

## Final Thoughts
Working on "Feudal Doodle" was a remarkable journey that pushed the boundaries of mobile gaming visuals and gameplay.
It exemplified the power of technical innovation and creative problem-solving in the face of development challenges.
